Mbappé Breaks Silence After France's World Cup Exit: "We Didn't Do What We Were Supposed to Do"

France captain Kylian Mbappé blamed his team's failure to stick to the game plan for their 2-0 loss to Spain in the 2026 World Cup semifinal, admitting the side came up short both technically and tactically.

Speaking to ESPN after the defeat, Mbappé said Spain took control of possession and dictated the pace, while France struggled to press high and gave the ball away in dangerous moments.

"We didn't play the way we wanted to, neither technically nor tactically. When you don't do what you're supposed to do in a World Cup semifinal, you don't win."

The forward called the result a major disappointment, but also acknowledged that his team did not have everything in place to reach the final.

Spain through to the final

Spain became the first team to book a place in the 2026 World Cup final with the win. FIFA named Pedro Porro the best player of the semifinal, and Spain forward Mikel Oyarzabal equaled the national team's record for most goals scored in a single World Cup tournament with his display against France.

A tournament France spent arguing with FIFA

France reached the semifinal having spent much of the knockout stage in dispute with FIFA's disciplinary department. After Folarin Balogun's suspension was downgraded following an intervention on the United States' behalf, the French federation formally asked FIFA to cancel Michael Olise's yellow card from the round of 16 win over Paraguay, citing the Balogun decision as precedent. England then lodged an appeal of its own against Jarell Quansah's red card, and the ruling was widely described as having opened the floodgates.

None of it changed how the semifinal went. Mbappé's assessment made no reference to officiating, discipline or misfortune. He pointed only at his own team's execution.

What a semifinal exit actually costs

Losing in the last four does not end a World Cup campaign outright. Beaten semifinalists drop into the third-place playoff, a fixture that has been part of the tournament since 1934 and is the only match at a World Cup that neither side particularly wants to be in. Spain went on to the final

Spain's win in the semifinal took them to MetLife Stadium to face Argentina, a match that ended up being remembered as much for what happened after the final whistle as during it. FIFA later confirmed suspensions and fines for four players and one member of Argentina's coaching staff over the brawl that broke out seconds after the game, with Leandro Paredes banned for 10 international matches.

Pedro Porro's semifinal award and Oyarzabal's record-equalling scoring run were, by then, part of a Spain campaign that had gone the distance. France's ended one round short, and Mbappé's own summary of why was the shortest one available: they did not do what they were supposed to do.
