Porto have lodged an official €8 million bid, around R$48 million, for Gabriel Mec, according to Gremistas.net. The 18-year-old attacking midfielder's future is now with Gremio's board, who are assessing the proposal.

This is the second formal approach in about a month. Shakhtar Donetsk got as far as an offer before talks broke down, not over money but over the sporting project on offer. Porto, competing in one of Europe's stronger leagues, do not have that problem, which is why this one looks more likely to move.

Why Gremio may take less than they want

The fee is below what the club consider ideal. Several things push against holding out for more.

  • Officials internally do not expect many other concrete bids to arrive.
  • There have been enquiries from Turkiye, but nothing formal has landed.
  • Mec's contract expires in September 2027. An extension was agreed verbally and has never been signed.
  • He has slipped down Luis Castro's pecking order and has gone unused in some matches.

The contract point is the sharpest of those. Keeping him without a signature only shortens the runway and increases the pressure to close new terms quickly, at a moment when his standing in the side is already sliding.

Gremio hold 70 per cent of his economic rights, so a €8m sale does not translate into €8m for the club.

Not involved on Sunday

Mec will not face Chapecoense at the Arena on Sunday, 18:30, in the Brasileirao. He reported pubis pain and will be rested.

Key facts at a glance

  • Porto's official offer is €8m, roughly R$48m.
  • Shakhtar Donetsk's earlier formal bid collapsed over the sporting project, not the fee.
  • Mec is 18 and under contract until September 2027, with an agreed but unsigned extension.
  • Gremio own 70 per cent of his economic rights.
  • Enquiries from Turkiye have not turned into offers.
  • He misses Sunday's Chapecoense game with pubis pain.
