The 10 Best Defensive Midfielders in the World in 2026, Ranked
A Premier League champion, the man of the match in the Champions League final and the World Cup's Golden Ball winner. The ten best holding midfielders in the world right now, with the numbers behind each one.
The best defensive midfielder in the world in 2026 is Arsenal's Declan Rice, who won the Premier League and made both UEFA's Champions League Team of the Season and the PFA Team of the Year, with PSG's Vitinha and the World Cup's Golden Ball winner, Rodri, next. Below is the full top ten, with a stat line for each player from the 2025-26 season.
How the list is ranked
Three things, in this order:
- The 2025-26 club season. Availability, the trophies the player's team won, and the end-of-season selections that judge individual players: UEFA's Champions League Team of the Season, the PFA Team of the Year, the UNFP Ligue 1 Team of the Year and the league teams of the season.
- The 2026 World Cup. It is the most recent evidence there is, so it counts. Players whose countries did not qualify are not marked down for that alone.
- Defensive output, tackles and interceptions, where the data is available and helps separate close cases.
Only players who mainly played as the holding midfielder in 2025-26, either at the base of a midfield three or in a two-man pivot, are eligible. Box-to-box and attacking midfielders are not. Reputation and transfer value are not criteria. Stat lines are for 2025-26.

Ages are as of 16 October 2026. A dash in the assists column means no reliable figure was found, so it is left out rather than guessed.
The holding midfielder sits in one of two places. In a 4-3-3 he is the single pivot behind two No.8s, the job Rodri does for Spain:
In a 4-2-3-1 the work is shared between two, as it was for Kimmich and Pavlović at Bayern:
1. Declan Rice (Arsenal, England)
2025-26: 36 Premier League appearances, 4 goals, 5 assists; 55 appearances, 5 goals in all competitions.
Rice was the engine of the Arsenal side that won the Premier League with 85 points. Across all competitions he made more tackles (91), won possession more often (239) and created more chances (96) than anyone else in the squad, and supporters voted him Arsenal's Player of the Season for the second year running, with 44% of the vote.
The individual honours were the widest of anyone here. He was one of three Arsenal players in UEFA's Champions League Team of the Season, was named in the PFA Team of the Year and was on the shortlist for the PFA Players' Player of the Year, which went to Bruno Fernandes. The season had two near misses: a 2-0 defeat by Manchester City in the League Cup final and the Champions League final against PSG, lost 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
At the World Cup he started seven games. His corner set up Harry Kane's second goal in the 4-2 win over Croatia, and in the third-place match against France he captained England and scored in the third minute of a 6-4 win.
2. Vitinha (PSG, Portugal)
2025-26: 29 Ligue 1 appearances, 1 goal, 7 assists; 50 appearances, 7 goals in all competitions.
Vitinha is the player PSG's possession runs through. Opta's Analyst, writing ahead of the final, counted 1,448 successful passes in his Champions League campaign, a record for a single season that beat Xavi's 1,299 from 2012-13, and noted he had played 82% of PSG's minutes in all competitions, more than any other player at the club. It describes him as a six/eight hybrid rather than a pure holding player, which is the one reservation about his place on a defensive-midfield list.
He was Player of the Match in the Champions League final in Budapest on 30 May, the second year running PSG won the trophy, and was in UEFA's Team of the Season and the UNFP Ligue 1 Team of the Year. PSG also won Ligue 1. A heel inflammation kept him out of two league games in April.
What separates him from Rice is the World Cup. Portugal went out in the round of 16, beaten 1-0 by Spain with a stoppage-time goal from Mikel Merino.
3. Rodri (Manchester City, Spain)
2025-26: 21 Premier League appearances, 1 goal; 33 appearances, 2 goals in all competitions.
Ranked on the summer alone, Rodri would be first. He captained Spain to the World Cup, starting all eight games, almost always as the single pivot, and was given the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player. Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final on 19 July, and Zubimendi replaced him in the 99th minute.
His club season is what holds him back. A hamstring injury at Brentford on 5 October 2025 kept him out for about two months, and he was sent off at Bodø/Glimt in a 3-1 Champions League defeat in January. City won the FA Cup and the League Cup but finished second in the league and went out of Europe in the round of 16.
He has since left City: Barcelona signed him on 18 August 2026 on a contract to 2030.
4. Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich, Germany)
2025-26: 29 Bundesliga appearances, 2 goals, 8 assists; 49 appearances, 2 goals in all competitions.
For Bayern, Vincent Kompany used Kimmich in central midfield rather than at right-back, and the Bundesliga describes him anchoring that midfield. Bayern won the league, Kimmich's tenth Bundesliga title, and the DFB-Pokal, beating Stuttgart 3-0 in the final. He scored an 87th-minute winner in a 3-2 win at Dortmund. Bayern went out to PSG in the Champions League semi-finals.
Germany used him differently. He captained them at right-back at the World Cup, where they won their group but lost to Paraguay on penalties in the round of 32. He scored his kick.
5. Aleksandar Pavlović (Bayern Munich, Germany)
2025-26: 24 Bundesliga appearances, 3 goals, 1 assist; 44 appearances, 4 goals in all competitions.
Kimmich's midfield partner at Bayern was expected to miss the start of the season after breaking an eye socket in training in August 2025, and still won the league and the cup. The Bundesliga's fan-voted Team of the Season, which included both Bayern midfielders, credited him with more than 100 touches a game. He scored his first Champions League goal in Bayern's 4-3 quarter-final win over Real Madrid in April. At the World Cup he started all four of Germany's games in midfield.
6. Martín Zubimendi (Arsenal, Spain)
2025-26: 38 Premier League appearances, 5 goals, 1 assist; 57 appearances, 6 goals in all competitions.
In his first season after joining from Real Sociedad, Zubimendi played in every one of Arsenal's 38 league games. He scored twice in a 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest in September, one of them a volley that won the Premier League's Goal of the Month, and made 69 league tackles and 39 interceptions. Unlike Rice, he was not picked in any of the major teams of the season.
He has a World Cup winner's medal, but from one appearance: he came on for Rodri in extra time of the final.
7. Moisés Caicedo (Chelsea, Ecuador)
2025-26: 33 Premier League appearances, 3 goals, 1 assist; 50 appearances, 5 goals in all competitions.
On the defensive numbers alone, Caicedo would be higher. He made more interceptions than anyone in the Premier League, 59, and 86 tackles. The cost showed in the discipline column: 11 yellow cards and a straight red against Arsenal in November for a challenge on Merino, upgraded after a VAR review. Chelsea finished tenth and lost the FA Cup final, and in April he signed a new contract to 2033.
He started all four of Ecuador's World Cup games, including a 2-1 win over Germany, before a 2-0 defeat by Mexico in the round of 32.
8. Aurélien Tchouaméni (Real Madrid, France)
2025-26: 33 La Liga appearances, 1 goal; 49 appearances, 2 goals in all competitions.
Xabi Alonso moved Tchouaméni back into midfield after spells at centre-back, and he was named in La Liga's Team of the Season. Madrid, though, finished second, eight points behind Barcelona, and won nothing. A hamstring injury after the defeat at Liverpool in November cost him about three weeks. At the World Cup an adductor problem kept him out of France's round-of-16 and quarter-final games. He was back to start the 2-0 semi-final defeat by Spain.
9. Ryan Gravenberch (Liverpool, Netherlands)
2025-26: 36 Premier League appearances, 5 goals, 3 assists; 50 appearances, 6 goals in all competitions.
Gravenberch was still Liverpool's deepest midfielder, but early in the season Opta's analysis found he was shooting three times as often per 90 minutes as the year before, 1.8 against 0.6. His 44 league interceptions were the tenth-most in the division. Liverpool finished fifth without a trophy, and he signed a new contract in March. At the World Cup his free-kick set up Virgil van Dijk's goal against Japan, and the Netherlands went out to Morocco on penalties in the round of 32.
10. Carlos Baleba (Brighton, Cameroon)
2025-26: 31 Premier League appearances, 0 goals; 35 appearances, 0 goals in all competitions.
At 22, Baleba had a quieter season in output, for a Brighton side that finished eighth. What he does is win the ball back: when Manchester United signed him on 25 August 2026 for a reported £65m plus £5m in add-ons, the club said he ranked in the top 8% for combined tackles and interceptions. Cameroon did not qualify for the World Cup.
Close calls and notable absences
Elliot Anderson played every league game for Nottingham Forest and led the division in duels won and possessions won, according to Opta's Team of the Season, which picked him as a central midfielder. That is the reason he is not here: he played as a central midfielder rather than as the holding one. Manchester City signed him in July for a reported £116m. The box-to-box midfielder guide explains how that role differs from the No.6.
João Neves won the Champions League and Ligue 1 with PSG, but he plays as the No.8 beside Vitinha rather than as the deepest man. The same goes for Fabián Ruiz, who started in central midfield for Spain at the World Cup, with Rodri as the single pivot behind him.
Bruno Guimarães scored nine league goals and was Newcastle's Player of the Year, but as a central midfielder rather than a holding one. Arsenal signed him in August.
What the list says about the position
Three of the ten, Rice, Vitinha and Rodri, are on the 30-man Ballon d'Or shortlist for the ceremony in London on 26 October, as are João Neves and Fabián Ruiz from the close calls. The best of them are no longer pure destroyers: Rice created more chances than anyone at Arsenal, and Vitinha broke a passing record held by Xavi.
The football formations guide shows where the holding midfielder fits in every common shape, and the guide to the No.10, the enganche and the trequartista covers the players at the other end of the midfield. For the defenders they protect, see the best centre-backs in the world in 2026.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is the best defensive midfielder in the world in 2026?
On the 2025-26 season and the 2026 World Cup, Arsenal's Declan Rice. He won the Premier League, was named in UEFA's Champions League Team of the Season and the PFA Team of the Year, retained Arsenal's Player of the Season award and scored for England in their third-place win at the World Cup.
Why is Rodri not number one after winning the Golden Ball?
Because his club season was short. A hamstring injury in October 2025 kept him out for about two months and he made 21 Premier League appearances for Manchester City. His World Cup, which Spain won with him as captain, is why he is third rather than lower.
Is Vitinha a defensive midfielder?
He plays at the base of PSG's midfield three, though Opta's Analyst describes him as a six/eight hybrid rather than a pure holding player. In 2025-26 he won the Champions League, was Player of the Match in the final and set a record for successful passes in one Champions League campaign.
Who made the most interceptions in the Premier League in 2025-26?
Chelsea's Moisés Caicedo, with 59, according to StatMuse. Everton's James Garner was second with 57. Caicedo also made 86 league tackles.
Where does Rodri play now?
At Barcelona. He left Manchester City and signed for Barcelona on 18 August 2026, on a contract to 30 June 2030, for a reported €60m guaranteed plus add-ons.
Why are Elliot Anderson and João Neves not on the list?
Both had very good seasons, but both played mainly as central midfielders rather than as the holding player. This list only includes players who mainly played at the base of the midfield or in a two-man pivot.
