The records

Monga's time at Leicester was short, and full of firsts.

The debut. He came on in the 74th minute for Bilal El Khannouss in a 3-0 defeat at Newcastle. Only Ethan Nwaneri had appeared in the Premier League younger at the time. Arsenal's Max Dowman made his debut at 15 years and 235 days that August, so Monga is now the third-youngest Premier League player.

The goal. Three days after his first Leicester start, he scored in a 2-1 defeat at Preston, at 16 years and 37 days, the youngest scorer the Championship has had.

He also played three EFL Trophy games for Leicester's Under-21s in 2024-25. He has not yet played a competitive game for Manchester City.

How he got here

Monga was born in Coventry and joined Leicester's academy at eight, at under-9 level. He signed a scholarship contract in June 2025, with professional terms expected once he turned 17, the earliest age English football allows them.

He was in a first-team matchday squad before he played a minute of senior football: aged 15 years and 212 days, he was named for Leicester's FA Cup fourth-round tie against Manchester United in February 2025. The Premier League debut followed two months later.

Leicester were relegated that season, and Monga spent 2025-26 as a regular in a Championship side, 30 appearances in all, before the transfer.

The move to Manchester City

City signed him on 11 July 2026, the day after his 17th birthday, on a five-year contract. The fee was reported at £10m plus up to £2.5m in add-ons. Arsenal had held talks with him beforehand, which is why the deal was widely reported as City beating them to it.

How a loan like the one that followed works for the player and for both clubs is set out in what "on loan" means in football.

The loan at Swansea

On 2 September 2026 he joined Swansea City on loan until the end of the season, as reported by Yahoo Sports. The deal was reported to carry no option to buy, so he returns to City in summer 2027. He wears the No.12 shirt.

His age added one more step: because he is under 18, Swansea needed an exemption under FIFA's rules on the transfer of minors before he could play for them.

England

Monga has represented England at four age levels, and captained the Under-16s.

He made his Under-19 debut in a 2-0 win over Ukraine on 3 September 2025, while he was still 16.

Why the age matters

Like Dowman, Monga will be an under-21 for several more seasons, which means he does not take up a place on a Premier League club's 25-man squad list. He also qualifies as homegrown, having been registered at an English club through his teens. Both make him worth more to City than his transfer fee alone suggests; Premier League squad rules explains why.
